History of the Society

The Northumberland & Newcastle Society has a fascinating history dating back to the 1920’s, when a Newcastle Rotarians’ luncheon led to the creation of the ‘Northumberland Society’ in 1924.

Becoming the Northumberland & Newcastle Society in 1929, the Society has quietly got on with its work, leading and raising awareness of countless campaigns to preserve the best of the North East’s architecture, landscapes and culture.

As we approach our centenary in 2024, we are giving some thought to bringing together a comprehensive archive of Northumberland & Newcastle Society activities, achievements and key alumni.

We know that information is currently held in a number of different archives, filing cabinets, and probably in people’s heads!
