New Book on the Border Counties Railway

The latest book in Middleton Press's Country Railway Routes series is "From Hexham to Hawick". The book, by Roger Darsley and Dennis Lovett, follows the route of the Border Counties Railway and contains contains photos, maps and other local history details. The route ran over the Kielder Viaduct, which is now under the guardianship of the Northumberland and Newcastle Society. (December 2011)

Tyneside Committee

The Tyneside Committee met on 29th November 2011. Items discussed included: the conversion of the former Co-Op into a hotel; the restoration and relocation of the Blucher sculpture in Killingworth; the state of the Mining Institute building. (November 2011).

Localism Bill Passed by Parliament

The Government’s controversial Localism Bill has completed its passage through Parliament, 18 months after it was unveiled by the coalition. Each section of The Act will be introduced in the coming months and then become law. It is anticipated that the majority are expected to come into force in April 2012.
