Northumberland & Newcastle Society

Tyneside Committee

By John Matthews, Vice-Chair of Tyneside Committee

The Tyneside Committee have suggested the creation of an annual Northumberland and Newcastle Society Award to be presented to the householder within a Conservation Area who has in our opinion actively improved and enhanced the built or landscaped environment incorporating their property. This may be by sympathetic restoration of buildings taking them back to their original design; perhaps reinstating ornamental railings removed during the last war, or even a new property, which compliments and enlivens a previously run-down neighbourhood. This would initially be a pilot project limited to Newcastle only and we would offer a year’s membership as a prize along with a Certificate of Merit from the Society. With our membership and contribution to both the Newcastle Conservation Advisory Panel (NCAP) and the Conservation Advisory Committee (CAC), we are in an ideal position to see what schemes are coming through the planning process and make comment. It is suggested that we also ask Society members to look out for potential prize-winners for this Award which could hopefully provide additional publicityfor the Society.
