New Books: Coastal Castles of Northumberland
Review of Stan Beckinsall's new book

This delightful book goes well beyond the usual ‘coffee table’ guide: all the ground plans of the castles are shown with architectural and archaelogical features highlighted in beautiful photographs, which also show the strategic and landscape setting in each case with views of and from every castle.
Dunstanburgh and Berwick castles are both are both wonderfully evocative ruins and Warkworth is a partial ruin. Bamburgh and Lindisfarne castles have both been ‘remodelled’, and Alnwick, as the only wholly inhabited castle, is in a category of its own. Their development and history is covered in the introduction.
This book will stimulate its readers, including those who have visited manytimes, to return to the castles and see them with a new sense of discovery.
